Dominique Zwartelé

Much of Dominique’s work as a visual artist deals with the identity of contemporary urban cultures. Her points of departure are their materials (debris), sounds, language, symbols and rituals, which she re-contextualize. She arrived at the totem as a form for exploring these idea.  ‘Can I give a totem a new language and a new identity in the canon of modern sculpture?’

At the moment she is making “Treasures ”. They are made of small pieces of plastic debris which she found on different beaches in Europe. Plastic waste that has been eroded by the sea, sand and the weather and caught her eye  during a walk along the seaside.
